Dorothy Robertson fonds. [1943-1993].

The fonds consists of a typescript "I Go (Not) Down To the Sea in Ships: Recollections of a Canadian Wren", photocopies taken from Dorothy Robertson's scrapbook, plus photographs and negatives. The photographic copies and negatives of the scrapbook were taken by Bill Thackray in 1993.

Dorothy Robertson served as a P.O. Wren Tel. S.O. (K) at "Y Station" (Wireless Observer Station), Gordon Head, 1944-1946. The staff of the "Y Station" were attached to the H.M.C.S. Givenchy, A shore establishment at the HMC Dockyard, Esquimalt. The "Y Station" site is now part of the University of Victoria (B.C.) campus. From the description of Dorothy Robertson fonds. Y Station was attached to HMCS Givenchy at HMC Dockyard, Esquimalt, a shore facility. Personnel were bussed up daily to Gordon Head to this top secret facility. Men, later Wrens listened to Japanese signals and these were later sent to Americans for translation and intelligence. Bruce Brown once drove the naval commander up to visit the station and that is why he donated the funds to have these copies generated.
